A desk for men’s clothes

Yankee Doodle Dandy

Clothes, houses, numbers, and nerve.

About

Draft, not yet accepted by the editor.

Yankee Doodle began as an insult. British soldiers used it for the colonials, and the song stuck, and the insult was kept. That is the whole reason for the name of this desk. A slight you decide to answer to becomes a standard.

Yankee, here, means American and means it without the flinch. American houses, American work clothes, American commercial nerve, the old names and the new money both. It does not mean the other rooms are guests. When Paris, Milan, London, Madrid or Tokyo make the better object, they get the page.

Doodle meant a fool. I am keeping that too. Loud clothes make a man look foolish more often than they make him look like a picture. The permission to look foolish is part of the practice. When a note on this desk is unsure, it should say so.

Dandy means the clothes and the rest of the maintenance: the shoes, the hair, the body, the reading, the money treated as a craft rather than a mood. The costume version of the dandy is of no use here.

The journal is the margin. The page is the record. Collaborations first, because a duet is already an event and a triple is the thing I do not want to miss. Then the numbers, then the houses, then the people who design them, then the oldest names, then whatever smaller practice I have actually fallen for.

The Urge is the other half. Ivy is the foundation, and Ivy is restraint, and I am trying to be less restrained. Not because a bright jacket is a moral act. Because the decision to be seen, repeated, moves into the rest of a life.

Policies

Models. Some drafts on this desk are written with a model from stored sources. Every post and narrative block prints a byline that says so. Nothing a model writes is public until the editor publishes it, and a model never supplies a figure. Private photos in the editor’s practice log reach a model only when he asks for a read on that entry.

Affiliate links. Links to eBay listings may carry eBay Partner Network tracking. YDD may earn a commission. The layout never changes to suit them.

Corrections. Every correction to a published fact is listed on the corrections page, with what was wrong, what it says now, and the source.

Numbers. Every figure carries a source name and an as-of time. Company revenues are from annual reports and are not menswear sales unless the filing says so. For information. Not investment advice. See Methods.
